Witness the profound biodiversity of Corcovado National Park during this full-day hiking excursion to the La Leona Ranger Station on the southern tip of the Osa Peninsula. Corcovado National Park is considered the crown jewel of Costa Rica’s national park system for its massive size, complex ecosystems, multiple life zones, and vast number of plants, trees, birds, reptiles, insects, and animals living within its confines. The excursion starts with a 6 a.m. departure by van from Lapa Rios to the Playa Carate trailhead (approximately 45 minutes). For safety reasons, hikers must be accompanied by a licensed guide to enter the park and pack in their own food and water, as no public amenities are available at La Leona. Lapa Rios will provide hikers and guides with a box lunch, snacks, and water for the trip. From Carate, the hike is approximately 3.5 kilometers to the La Leona Ranger Station and further into the park’s interior, according to guests’ choosing. The trail follows the coastline with shaded and sun-exposed (approximately 20%) segments and two or more river crossings. The Corcovado by Land hike covers an average of 8 to 9 miles (14 to 15 kilometers), with entry and exit along the same coastal trail. Return to the Lodge between 2:30 and 3 p.m.
