A Small Ecolodge in Costa Rica is Ranked among the World’s Top Hotels
OSA PENINSULA , Costa Rica—Lapa Rios Ecolodge in Costa Rica has been selected as one of the world’s top hotels in the 2005 Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice survey.
Lapa Rios is small in comparison to other winners in the Top 10 List of Hotels for Central America and Mexico, the likes of which include Marriott, Sheraton and Four Seasons. But it’s the lodge’s intimate setting - sixteen spacious suita-thatch bungalows nestled within the rain forest – that gained it a spot among the big hitters for the second time in two years.
E very year since 1988, a select sample of Condé Nast Traveler readers have taken the Readers' Choice Survey. Hotels are rated based on five categories: Food/Dining, Location, Overall Design, Rooms and Service.
“The goal is perfection, and Condé Nast Traveler readers are finding more destinations approaching it every year,” writes Conde Nast. From palaces and plantations to ranches and villas, this year readers selected a total of 291 superb hotels in different regions of the world.
This is the latest of many awards for Lapa Rios, which first opened its doors in 1993. Earlier this year the ecolodge was named to the 2005 Conde Nast Green List and received the U.S. Secretary of State’s Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE) for its exemplary ecotourism and business practices. In 2004 its “swank bungalows and gourmet cuisine” put this property on Condé Nast Traveler’s 2004 Gold List. In 2003 Lapa Rios received a top ten rating among Latin American hotels in the Condé Nast Traveler’s Reader’s Choice poll.
“Our environmental preservation efforts, contributions to local culture and location in a rainforest reserve, when combined with exceptional guest experiences, are what make Lapa Rios an award-winning establishment,” says owner Karen Lewis. “Lapa Rios is a small enterprise yet one that makes a big difference to people and the environment.”
