Before plastic bags, beer cans, pet plastic bottles and styrofoam the earth was a lot cleaner. We can help our present and future generations to have a cleaner environment by changing some simple things in our standard of living. Let's become models to lead a cleaner and less contaminating life.
Things that we can do to help:
1. The best way to eliminate waste is to not produce it.
- In life one should think: "The least things I use, the better!"
- Only buy things if you really need them.
- Before buying an appliance, find out which one is the most energy efficient.
- When walking or driving always pick up trash.
2. Eliminate as much trash as possible.
- Buy only recyclable products.
- Buy only beers and sodas in recyclable containers.
- Eliminate the use of plastic and cans that are non-recyclable (as much as possible)
- Re-use containers and plastic bags as much as you can.
- Try to pick "paper" instead of "plastic" at the supermarket.
- Avoid buying products with styrofoam packaging.
3. Separate trash into "recyclable / reusable" and "non-recyclable"
- Recyclable waste can be re-used, burnt or buried:
a.Take all raw peelings from vegetables or fruit and mix it with dirt, move it frequently and in two months you will have the best organic fertilizer.
b.Someone who is less fortunate might appreciate left over food, if nicely packed.
c.Decomposed left over food might be appreciated by a nearby farmer (and his pigs!)
d.Paper, fax paper, newspapers and carton can be recycled and new paper can be made out of it.
e.Burn only dirty paper, do not burn anything else as it may be toxic.
f.Plastic gallons sometimes can be re-used by other people or at gas stations.
g.Glass can be recycled into new glass.
h.Aluminum cans can be recycled into new cans.
i.Pet plastic can be used to make toys, new bottles, hoses or other products.
- Non-recyclable waste can be sent to the dumpsites. Try to minimize the amount sent by applying the above trash separating system.
4. Help make recycling easier in your home town.
- Check out the recycling areas where you live and see if they need help.
- Contact your neighbors and start a recycling campaign.
- Educate the people around you.
5. Save energy
- Turn off lights, fans, air conditioners and appliances when not in use.
- Buy energy efficient light bulbs.
- Regulate the heater or air conditioner and use it only when necessary.
- Use the stove in medium to high, not high all the time.
- Only open the freezer or refrigerator when really needed and don't leave the door open while making a decision on what to take out.
6. Save water
- Turn off the faucet when not needed.
- When showering, brushing your teeth, or washing dishes, only run the water when necessary.
7. Avoid contaminating the environment
- Turn off your car's engine when not needed.
- Buy biodegradable soap dish, laundry detergent and disinfectants.
- Do not use products with spray containers.
8. Teach yourself and educate others!
- The most important point is to learn about what is happening in the world, learn how to help and how to make it better and then teach others (especially children).
We hope that these points help!
